In collaboration with the place-based organization Pacoima Beautiful, we proposed community-driven alternative visions for the future of the Whiteman Airport, in an effort to decommission the airport and begin addressing the environmental injustice this harmful land use created for surrounding community residents. To mitigate the environmental harm the airport generated, community residents proposed that the decommissioned land serve as a public amenity. Community outreach yielded a series of suggestions that were incorporated into the proposal for a new masterplan: open space, public infrastructure, social spaces and services related to healthcare, housing, and education.

Please note these are not finalized plans for the future of the airport, but rather a tool for envisioning a possible future for this space that reflects the type of multi-benefit infrastructure and investment that can increase the quality of life for local residents. To learn more about the community-based efforts to bring these possibilities to Pacoima, visit shutdownwhitemanairport.com
